Architecture decisions are expensive to change

The choices made in the first weeks of a project (how the system is split, where data lives, how services communicate, how it's hosted) decide how fast you can move for years. Get them wrong and every feature gets slower and riskier. As a .NET solution architect I help companies make those decisions deliberately, with clear trade-offs, and then stay involved to make sure the design survives contact with real requirements.

I've spent 10+ years building and leading .NET projects, including several years as a senior consultant for investment banking and global payments clients and, since 2018, as a freelance architect and lead developer for product companies worldwide.

How I help as an architect

  • System design

Target architecture, module boundaries, data ownership and integration patterns for new products.

  • Architecture reviews

Independent assessment of an existing .NET system with a prioritised improvement roadmap.

  • Cloud architecture

Azure and AWS designs: App Service, Container Apps, AKS, serverless, messaging and cost control.

  • Modernisation strategy

Incremental migration plans from .NET Framework, monoliths or on-premises to modern .NET and the cloud.

  • Security & compliance

Identity, authorisation, secrets management and secure-by-design practices.

  • Technical leadership

Coding standards, code reviews, mentoring and hands-on help for your development team.

What an architecture engagement looks like

  1. Discovery: business goals, users, constraints, budget, team skills and existing systems.
  2. Design: target architecture (modular monolith, microservices or event-driven), data model, integration patterns, security model and hosting on Azure or AWS, captured in diagrams and architecture decision records.
  3. Foundation: I build the skeleton myself: solution structure, authentication, CI/CD, observability and the first vertical slice, so the team has a working reference.
  4. Leadership: code reviews, mentoring and regular architecture check-ins while your team delivers.

Prefer to keep things simple? Many teams over-engineer with microservices too early. I'll tell you honestly when a well-structured modular monolith is the better choice.

Architecture reviews and rescue projects

If you already have a system that's slow, unstable or hard to change, an architecture review gives you an independent assessment within a couple of weeks: what's working, what's risky, and a prioritised roadmap. Typical findings include data access bottlenecks, missing boundaries between modules, security gaps, fragile deployments and cloud bills that are higher than they need to be.

Ways to work together

  • Architecture review

A fixed-scope assessment of your current system, delivered as a written report and roadmap.

  • Design & foundation

Architecture for a new product plus the working skeleton your team builds on.

  • Fractional lead architect

Ongoing part-time architecture leadership: reviews, decisions and mentoring every month.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a solution architect and a senior developer?

A senior developer delivers features within an architecture. A solution architect designs that architecture: how the system is structured, hosted, secured and integrated, and how it will scale and evolve. I do both, so designs stay practical.

Do you only design, or also build?

Both. I usually build the foundation and first features myself, then support your team through reviews and mentoring.

Microservices or monolith?

It depends on team size, scaling needs and how well the domain is understood. For most products I recommend a modular monolith first, designed so parts can be extracted later.

Can you work with our in-house team?

Yes. Most architecture engagements are about enabling an existing team: shared decisions, clear documentation and regular reviews.
